Welcome to the commemorative of Amelia Earhart's 1937 World Flight.

BACKGROUND
==========

Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan left Oakland, California, USA, on 20 May 1937 in their Lockheed Electra L10E in an attempt to be the first to circumnavigate the globe at or near the equator. They chose to fly an easterly route to best avoid customary storm systems in the Caribbean and Africa.

They never made that goal.

On 2 July 1937 they were in Lae, New Guinea with 19,000 NM behind them. The most dangerous leg lay ahead of them, to tiny Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean, 2224 NM away.

Earhart and Noonan left Lae at 10:00 AM local time. Their last communication was 20 hours and 13 minutes later. They were flying a 157°/337° Line of Position, 1000 ft above the ocean in search of Howland Island.

We wish you better luck finding Howland Island.
